Laboratory blood tests tell you where you are. Longitude tells you where you are heading, while there is still time to change course.

What it tells you

Longitude produces a ten-year risk score in five areas:

Heart attack
Ischaemic stroke
Type 2 diabetes
Chronic kidney disease
Fatty liver disease

Each score is shown against people of your age and sex, so you can see where you sit. You also receive a full lipid and metabolic panel, the standard blood values your doctor already uses.

Why it can see ahead

Longitude measures your metabolome, the hundreds of small molecules circulating in your blood that show how your body is working right now. That pattern shifts with weight, diet, treatment, alcohol and sleep, and it begins to shift months or years before a condition would show up on a routine test.

Around 250 of those markers are measured from a single sample using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the same physics as an MRI scanner applied at molecular scale.

Your genes don’t change. Your metabolism does.

This is what separates Longitude from a genetic test. A genetic result is fixed for life. Your metabolic profile responds: to losing weight, to starting a statin, to treating blood pressure, to drinking less, to sleeping better.

So Longitude is not a single verdict. You can be tested, act on what you find, and be tested again to see whether it is working.

Two ways to take it

Venous

A standard blood draw at your GP practice or a partner laboratory, on the same run as any other blood test. This is the usual route.

Finger-prick

A dried blood spot sample, which needs no laboratory and no phlebotomist. Used mainly in workplace and corporate programmes.

Both produce the same analysis and the same report.

What happens

You and your doctor agree the test.
A sample is taken, at your practice or at a partner laboratory.
The sample is analysed at Nightingale Health's laboratory in the United Kingdom, Finland, New York, Singapore or Tokyo.
Your report is returned to your own doctor, in your name.
You go through it together and decide what, if anything, to do.

The science behind it

Longitude is delivered on the Nightingale Health platform. More than 900 peer-reviewed papers have been published using it, and its predictive models have been validated in studies drawing on the UK, Estonian and Finnish national biobanks, covering more than 700,000 participants. The platform is CE-marked.

The same technology is in use in Finnish occupational healthcare, where more than 200,000 employees have been tested and has now been rolled out into Finland’s primary care health service.

Availability
